Cloud Migration and Management in Northern Virginia
Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Azure and AWS, planned around the applications you actually run.
Moving to the cloud should retire the server in your closet and put email and files within reach from anywhere, without a lost mailbox or a Monday morning lockout.
It is for offices still running an on-site file or application server, teams moving between Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, and businesses whose cloud bill keeps growing. DistrictConnects plans the move, migrates users, data and servers, secures the result and manages it afterward.
- 100+DMV businesses supported
- Azure and AWSTeam certifications include Azure, AWS Solutions Architect and AWS Security
- 10+Years of hands-on engineering
What goes wrong with an old server or a rushed cloud move
Most cloud problems we are called in for come from one of two places: a server that stayed too long, or a move made over a weekend with no plan.
- One aging server holding everything. File shares, a line-of-business app and printing on a single box past its warranty. When it fails, everything it runs stops with it.
- A migration with no plan. Missing mail, broken shared links, permissions copied wrong and staff locked out on Monday morning.
- Assuming the provider handles security. Under the shared responsibility model, your data, accounts, settings and access policies stay your job on every cloud service.
- Sharing with no rules. “Anyone with the link” files, former staff still in shared folders and no data loss prevention for client records.
- A cloud bill that keeps growing. Virtual machines sized for a peak that never came, storage nobody cleans up and licenses for people who left.
- Nobody owns it after go-live. The project ends, the migration vendor leaves and nobody manages users, security or costs from then on.
The cloud moves the hardware off your premises; it does not take the responsibility for your data with it.
Which platform fits which job
We recommend platforms per application, not one answer for every office.
- Microsoft 365. For offices that live in Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams. SharePoint and OneDrive replace the file server, and Intune manages the devices. See Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 migration.
- Google Workspace. For teams that work in Gmail, Drive and Meet. We migrate into it, out of it, and manage it the same way.
- Azure or AWS servers. For applications that still need a server: virtual machines, cloud networking, storage, backup and recovery, without hardware in your closet.
- Hybrid. For workloads that must stay on-site, a VMware or Hyper-V host tied into cloud identity and backup and disaster recovery. Cloud phones are covered on VoIP phone systems.
What is included
Cloud readiness and plan
An inventory of your servers, applications, data and users, a recommendation on which platform fits each one, an identity and access design, and a written plan with a timeline before anything moves.
Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace migrations
Email, contacts, calendars and files moved between platforms or from an old host, with the data checked afterward so nothing is missing. Cutover steps are scheduled after hours wherever possible.
File server to SharePoint, OneDrive or Google Drive
Your shared folders rebuilt as SharePoint sites, Teams or shared drives, with permissions mapped to groups instead of individual people, so the old file server can be retired.
Servers in Azure and AWS
Virtual machines for applications that still need a server, with cloud networking, storage and a secure connection back to the office. Platform services are used where they remove a server you would otherwise have to patch.
Virtualization and hybrid setups
When a workload has to stay on-site, we consolidate it onto VMware or Hyper-V hosts and connect it to cloud identity and cloud backup, so the office and the cloud are managed as one.
Security hardening
MFA on every account, conditional access, data loss prevention, sharing rules for external links and separate admin accounts. Configured beyond the built-in defaults of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
Backup and recovery
Backups for cloud mailboxes, files and servers that sit outside the platform they protect, plus a recovery plan for each system. Details on our backup and disaster recovery service.
Management after go-live
User adds and removals, license management, security monitoring, help desk for your staff and a regular review of what the cloud is costing you, so unused resources and seats are removed.
How the work runs
Free assessment
We look at your current setup, the applications you rely on, how your people work and what is not working. You get a plain answer on what should move, what should stay and why.
Plan and timeline
A step-by-step plan covering platform choice, identity, data, permissions, the cutover date and who does what, with an itemized quote. You know the timeline before we start.
Prepare
Accounts, licenses, MFA and security settings are built on the new platform first. Data starts copying in the background while your team keeps working on the old system.
Cutover
Mail flow, DNS and file access switch over, usually after hours. Phones, laptops and desktops are pointed at the new platform, and the old system stays readable until the move is confirmed.
Validate and train
We check that mail, calendars, files and permissions arrived intact, fix anything that did not, and show staff where everything lives now.
Manage and optimize
We take over day-to-day administration, watch security and backups, and review usage and licensing so the monthly bill matches what you actually use.

Common questions
How long does a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace migration take?
It depends on the complexity of the job: the number of users, how much email and file data moves, and where it is coming from. You get a written timeline before we start, and most of the copying happens in the background while your team keeps working.
Will we have downtime during the migration?
In most cases, no. Data is copied to the new platform while everyone keeps working on the old one, and the switch of mail flow and file access is scheduled after hours wherever possible. The old system stays readable until we confirm everything arrived. Staff may need to sign in again on their phones and laptops, and we walk them through it.
What happens to our existing email and files?
Email, contacts, calendars and files all move to the new platform. After the move we check the data against the source to confirm nothing is missing, and fix permissions or shared links that did not carry over. Your team picks up where they left off, on the new platform, with the folder structure they already know or a cleaner one if you want it.
Is our data secure in the cloud?
The platforms are well protected, but the provider only secures its side. Under Microsoft's shared responsibility model, your data, accounts, settings and access policies stay your responsibility on every cloud service. The common gaps sit on that side: no MFA, loose sharing rules, old admin accounts. We configure MFA, conditional access, data loss prevention and access controls, then monitor them.
Should we move our server to Azure or AWS, or keep it on-site?
It depends on what the server runs. File shares usually belong in SharePoint, OneDrive or Google Drive, not on a cloud server. A line-of-business application that needs a server can run as a virtual machine in Azure or AWS. Some workloads, like software tied to local equipment, are better on a small on-site host. We recommend per application, after the assessment.
How much does a cloud migration cost?
It depends on the number of users, how much data moves, how many servers and applications are involved, and how much security work is included. We do not publish prices. After a free assessment you get an itemized quote and a timeline, and ongoing management is quoted separately so you can see both. Plans are month to month, with no long-term contract.
Do you support us after the migration?
Yes. We can manage Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and cloud servers afterward: user adds and removals, license management, security monitoring and help desk for your staff. Our team works 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm, and new requests get a reply the same day. Existing clients are covered by their SLA, from a 1-hour response to next day.
