Dual ISP and LTE Internet Failover for Northern Virginia Businesses
A second connection that takes over on its own, tested by unplugging the first one.
When your main internet line goes down, phones, Microsoft 365, card payments and cloud apps should keep running on a second connection without anyone touching a cable.
This page is for offices, practices, stores and job sites that lose real work every time the ISP has an outage, and for anyone whose current backup plan is a phone hotspot. DistrictConnects designs the failover, coordinates the second carrier, configures your firewall and tests it live before we call it done.

What stops when the internet goes down
Outages do not announce themselves, and a single connection is a single point of failure. Even a short outage stalls most offices, because almost everything now runs through the internet:
- Phones. VoIP calls drop and the main number stops ringing, so patients and clients get nothing.
- Microsoft 365 and cloud apps. Email, Teams, SharePoint, your CRM, practice management or accounting software all stop together.
- Card payments. Cloud POS and card terminals stop processing, and staff fall back to writing down card numbers or turning customers away.
- Remote staff. VPN tunnels to the office drop, so people at home lose the files and systems they need.
- Cameras and door access. Cloud-managed cameras stop uploading and remote viewing goes dark, right when you may need it.
- A hotspot is not a plan. Someone has to notice, find a phone, connect each laptop by hand and hope the data plan holds. Desk phones, card terminals and printers never join it.
Automatic failover means your staff never have to notice the outage at all.
Failover you can rely on
Failover that has never been tested is a guess. We build it so it works the first time it is needed.
- Paths that fail independently. The backup reaches your building a different way than the primary, so one cut cable or local outage cannot take both down.
- Built on your firewall. The same team that runs your firewall configures the failover, so security policy, VPNs and segmentation carry over to the backup line.
- Calls stay up. QoS keeps VoIP phones first in line on the backup connection, and the network and Wi-Fi behind it are designed to match.
- Proven with a live test. We unplug the primary line, time the switchover and document the result. “Typically under a minute” is checked at your site, not assumed.
What is included
Connectivity assessment
We review your current circuits, firewall model, the apps that depend on the internet, VPNs and how long you can afford to be offline. Many business firewalls already support dual WAN; it was simply never configured.
Design and carrier coordination
Primary and backup chosen to fail independently: fiber with cable, or either with 4G/5G cellular. Active-passive or active-active, per site. We coordinate ordering and activation of the second circuit and specify the cellular hardware.
Firewall configuration
Dual WAN on your firewall with health checks to known endpoints, failure thresholds that avoid flapping, routing policy, VPN tunnels that move to the backup, and QoS so calls keep priority. The config is backed up before and after.
Same security on the backup line
The backup connection runs through the same firewall rules, network segmentation, content filtering and monitoring as the primary. Staff, guest and camera networks stay separated while you are on cellular.
Priority traffic in failover
On a cellular backup, phones, POS, email and your key business apps get the bandwidth first. Software updates, cloud backups and guest streaming are held back until the main line returns.
Job site connectivity
Construction trailers and temporary sites get internet from Starlink or bonded cellular connections, combined for capacity and backup, with the same firewall and segmentation as the main office.
Live test and documentation
We physically disconnect the primary line, time the switchover, confirm calls and apps keep working, and check that traffic moves back on its own. You get the architecture documented for your cyber insurer or auditor.
Monitoring both connections
Both circuits and the firewall are monitored 24/7. Failover events are reviewed, thresholds tuned, and we take repeat outages up with the ISP so you do not have to sit on hold.
How the work runs
Connectivity assessment
We check your circuits, firewall, critical apps and VPNs, and measure cellular signal at your address before recommending anything.
Design
We pick the backup type and failover mode for each site, set the health check and switchback rules, and decide which traffic gets priority. You get the design and an itemized quote.
Carrier coordination
We coordinate ordering and activation of the secondary circuit or cellular service, and install the modem, antenna or Starlink hardware where it gets the best signal.
Firewall configuration
Dual WAN, health checks, VPN failover, QoS and the same security policy on both lines are configured on your firewall, with the configuration backed up before and after.
Live failover test
We unplug the primary connection during an agreed window, time the switch, test phones and key apps, then reconnect and confirm the automatic switch back.
Ongoing monitoring
Both connections are monitored 24/7. Our team works 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm, on a month-to-month agreement with no long-term contract.

Common questions
What is dual ISP internet failover?
Two independent internet connections terminate on your business firewall, and both are checked continuously. When the primary fails its health checks, the firewall moves traffic to the secondary automatically. When the primary is stable again, traffic moves back on its own. Nobody in the office has to unplug anything, call anyone or switch to a hotspot. Most offices notice a short pause, if they notice anything at all.
How quickly does failover happen?
Typically under a minute. The exact time depends on your firewall model, how the health checks are tuned and how the outage presents itself. Some connections in progress, such as a call or a file upload, may drop briefly and reconnect. We time the switchover during a live test, with the primary line physically unplugged, so you know the real number for your office.
Why use cellular as the backup instead of a second wired ISP?
Two wired lines often share the same street, conduit or pole, so one construction crew can cut both. Cellular reaches the building over a completely separate path. 4G and 5G speeds are enough for phones, Microsoft 365, cloud apps and remote access. Where a second wired provider runs over a different path, dual wired ISPs with active-active load balancing can also make sense.
Do we need a new firewall?
Usually not. Most current business firewalls, including FortiGate, Meraki, Palo Alto Networks, SonicWall, UniFi, WatchGuard and pfSense, support dual WAN failover. In many offices the feature is there and was simply never set up. The assessment confirms whether yours can do it. If the firewall is end of life or too small for the job, we tell you before you buy a second circuit.
Will the backup keep us online during a power outage?
Failover covers an ISP outage, not a power cut. If the building loses power, the firewall, modems and switches go down with it. A UPS sized to that equipment keeps the network up long enough to ride out short power blips and lets laptops on battery keep working on the cellular line. We size the UPS as part of the design.
Should the cellular backup be 4G or 5G?
Either can work. What matters is the signal at your address and inside your building. A stable 4G LTE signal beats a weak, unstable 5G one. We measure cellular coverage on site before choosing the carrier and hardware, and add an external antenna when the closet or basement location blocks the signal.
Can you connect a construction trailer or temporary job site?
Yes. Job sites often have no wired internet at all. We use Starlink, bonded cellular connections, or both together, behind a business firewall, so the trailer gets a usable connection for plans, email, cameras and phones. The site gets the same security policy as your main office, and the kit can move to the next project when this one closes.
How much does internet failover cost?
It depends on whether your firewall already supports dual WAN, the type of backup connection, the carrier plan, the number of sites and whether you need antennas, Starlink hardware or a UPS. We do not publish prices because each site starts from a different place. After a free connectivity assessment you get an itemized quote. Management is month to month, with no long-term contract.
